South Platte River Trail Overview

Published on Oct 4, 2004

The South Platte River Trail take travelers on a historical and scenic tour of the northeast corner of Colorado. The 19-mile trail loop traverses the Overland/California and ranges the state's Pony Express trails, as well as the routes of the first Transcontinental Railroad, telegraph, and automobile road.

Tourists can investigate the site of a battle between Indians and US Army forces and wander the site of old Fort Sedgwick or the Fort Sedgwick Cemetery. At the Fort Sedgwick Depot Museum travelers learn more about the area's earlier histories and look at artifacts from a bygone era.

The South Platte River Trail offers more than historical insights. Not only can visitors explore a historical site but they can also appreciate the natural beauties along the South Platte River, such as Devil's Dive and the Gibello's Caves. Sedgwick County also offers hunting and fishing opportunities in state wildlife areas. All these attractions - and more - make the South Platte River Trail a delightful walk through the "Wild West."
