Approximately one-third of the nation's population lives within a day's drive of Longhouse Scenic Byway, but that's not the only reason this location is prime. Traversing through the Allegheny National Forest, this byway offers fantastic foliage year-round - whether it be the white-blossomed Mountain Laurels in the middle of June or the contrasting colors of the green pine needles on the Red Pines with the abundance of crisp snow. During the fall, however, the vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow leaves complement the dark green needles of the pine trees to provide exquisite foliage.
Following along side the Kinzua Bay fork of the Allegheny Reservoir, the western segment of Longhouse Scenic Byway awards travelers with refreshing lakeside views. But don't just drive past. Stop for opportunities to camp, boat, swim, or picnic. The only limit to its use is the limit of time you have to take advantage of all the recreational opportunities. Also, the Pennsylvania state records for Walleye and Northern Pike are held at Allegheny Reservoir, a good incentive to cast in your line. You may not break the state record, but trophy size Muskellunge fish are consistently caught there as well.
The byway is closed to public vehicles from late December to April first, but a snowmobile or an ATV offers the opportunities to meander through the Allegheny National Forest and ride along over 80 miles of groomed trails for off road vehicles. With a little bit of extra packing, you can enjoy the five-mile cross-country ski trail. Designed for beginning to intermediate skiers, it is a perfect family activity. Another wintertime activity would be to take advantage, once again, of the excellent fishing in the Allegheny Reservoir and nearby streams. But, during this time the equipment would need to include an ice auger and a warm coat! With everything Longhouse Scenic Byway has to offer, a small trip could turn into a lasting family tradition.
