Along the West Cascades Scenic Byway, scenery combines with recreation to provide a fantastic haven for any traveler. Absorb pristine views of forested valleys and snow-capped peaks while hiking or riding along the trails of colorfully-named mountains like Three Fingered Jack or the Three Sisters. Let the solitude and serenity of the surrounding evergreens relax you as you paddle on the translucent waters of the area's lakes. Activities for all seasons abound.

In the summer, hike or take a horseback ride along the well-maintained trails of the Willamette National Forest. Enjoy panoramic views of rushing waterfalls and fields of wildflowers. Picnic by the shores of Detroit Lake near the center of the byway, where camping, biking, hiking, swimming, boating and wildlife-watching are just some of the many activities available in the parks, marinas, towns and other areas at this popular reservoir. Perhaps you'll spot an eagle! Or visit Cougar Reservoir a bit further south for more water-based activities. Feel the wind rush by your face when water-skiing or boating around the lake. If you want a more relaxing experience, explore the depths with a swim in the clear water.

As winter closes in, activities don't stop. You can ride a snowmobile, sled down snow-covered hills, or tramp beneath frosted trees on snowshoes in the Willamette Pass Winter Recreation Area. Take the quicker route down the mountain by skiing. When you want to unwind after a long day, soak in the area's hot springs. Check ahead -- although usually open even in winter, some hot springs are retreats available only for registered visitors, while others such as Terwilliger Hot Springs on Cougar Reservoir may not be suitable for all ages.
