Nestled between Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon National Parks, Scenic Byway 12 is located in one of the most beautiful places on earth. While marveling at the region's scenic wonders, keep an eye out for the winged wildlife that make their home among the colorful sandstone spires and castles of southern Utah. Prepare to be amazed by a flurry of feathers and sculptures in sandstone as you drive Utah's Scenic Byway 12.
If you don't stop at Capitol Reef National Park during your trip you will miss out on an exciting birding adventure. Bring your binoculars to catch a glimpse of American Kestrel, Red-naped Sapsucker, or Pinyon and Scrub Jays. Other birds you may see in the park include Black-billed Magpie, Canyon Wren, American Robin, and Northern Orioles, among many others. Drop by the park's nature center to learn more, and participate in free ranger-guided activities such as a nature walk or evening program.
Make sure to stop at Bryce Canyon National Park and check out the California Condor. This vulture-like bird can commonly be found in the park. However, you will find that common doesn't mean ordinary. This scavenger is the largest bird of prey in North America. Many other kinds of birds call Bryce Canyon home. Some of the more notable ones include the Violet-green Sparrow, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, Raven, and Clark's Nutcracker.
Stop at Red Canyon at the western end of the byway to see some of the 175 different species that frequent the canyon. Observe Cassin's Kingbird, Stellers Jay, Black-throated Grey Warbler, and Osprey. Also watch out for Hermit Thrush, Clark's Nut Cracker, Tanagers, and the Ruby Crowned Kinglet.
Travel Scenic Byway 12 to be amazed by a flurry of feathers. You will not be disappointed in the numerous variety of birds that are spotted amidst the colorful rocks of Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon National Parks as well as Red Canyon. Keep your eyes open to have an exciting birding trip.
