For many, the perfect New England winter scene involves more than the typical cozy cottages with smoking chimneys. Are you one of those who craves wintry adventure? Then tune up your snowmobile and head out onto miles of pristinely groomed trails on Maine’s Old Canada Road Scenic Byway. With access to one of the nation’s most extensive snowmobile trail systems, friendly and active snowmobile clubs, and blankets of soft, powdery snow, Old Canada Road will take you on an unforgettable sledding escapade.
Maine’s Interconnected Trail System (ITS), which is maintained by local snowmobile clubs, the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, and local businesses and landowners, consists of a well-maintained, signed, and extensive networks of trails throughout most of the state. Several main trails, including ITS 89 and ITS 87, surround Old Canada Road as they head north from the very southern tip of the state. The ITS facilitates adventurous treks across hundreds of mile while providing frequent access to amenities in local towns.
Along the ITS, snowmobile thoroughfares pass near or through inviting byway communities before eventually continuing into Quebec. The wooded, pristine town of Jackman claims the distinction of Maine’s “hub of snowmobiling” and backs up the assertion with full-time groomers, welcoming accommodations, and an average snowfall of more than 10 feet. The small towns of The Forks and Caratunk, about halfway down the byway, offer lodges, sled rentals, and plenty of local knowledge about the area’s trails.
The Maine Snowmobiling Association has lots of resources for snowmobiling in the area and Maine in general. including trail condition reports, maps, sled registration information, safety course schedules, and more. Send away for a CD course on snowmobiling safety, and "Ride Right, Ride Smart" in Maine!
Create the perfect winter experience this season and come snowmobiling along the Old Canada Road Scenic Byway. Spend the day blazing your way through sparkling white powder and pristine scenery, then relax for the evening in a warm, cozy lodge. However you choose to spend it, your snow-filled journey on the Old Canada Road will be picture-perfect.
