The Lakes to Locks Passage in eastern New York is famous for its seasonal beauty, and winter is surely not an exception. The region is known for winter sports, and plenty of opportunities exist for fun in the snow. While enjoying the best of winter, don’t forget to jump on a snowmobile for a thrilling and beautiful experience.
Located along the byway, the Chestertown area of New York presents unrivaled snowmobiling trails. Wind through snow-covered evergreens as you explore New York's Adirondack Mountains north of serene Lake George and ride the trail that goes through the towns of Brant Lake, Chestertown, Pottersville, and Warrensburg.
Since 1961, the annual Winter Carnival in Lake George has celebrated all of the great Adirondack wintertime outdoor activities with four activity-packed weekends in the month of February. Amid the Winter Carnival staples such as the polar bear swim and outhouse races are some great new additions such as Vintage Snowmobile Races, Moonlight Rides, and guided snowmobile rides.
The township of Hague is located 15 minutes from the byway and hosts over 16 miles of immaculately groomed trails, each dotted with scenic pull-offs for picnics and pictures. Explore the region’s lakes and historic French and Indian War sites while enjoying the breathtaking views of the Adirondacks. Local clubs meticulously groom the trails that connect Hague to historic Ticonderoga.
Located along the byway, Washington County hosts the annual Greenwich Uphill Races each winter at Willard Mountain. Race up the mountain for prizes and a trophy, and take time to snowmobile along the area’s beautiful lakes and rolling hills.
Washington County has an extensive network of trails that use the Champlain Canal as a main artery for the countywide trail system. Home to nine snowmobile clubs, which make up the membership of the Washington County Association of Snowmobile Clubs, visitors can use the trail system to travel most of scenic Washington County. From the mountain overlooks east of Lake George to the rolling rural landscapes of the Batten Kill Valley, winter transforms Washington County to a snowmobiler’s playground.
Be ready for a safe, snow-filled trip by reading the New York State’s Snowmobiler’s Guide or attending a Snow Safety Course, both provided by the Snowmobiling Unit of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
