Big Sheep Creek Byway, near Dell, MT, offers a fantastic opportunity to peer down into the depths of Big Sheep Creek and up into the heights of Big Sheep Canyon. This mostly two-lane gravel road has little traffic, so when you gaze upon this lonely segment of the Rockies, you will see it much the same way as the early Native Americans and mountain men saw it. Quite fittingly, you are also likely to encounter big horn sheep, elk, and deer as you travel this solitary route.
Drive all 50 miles of this byway at once, or take opportunities to experience some of Montana’s southwestern region on foot. A few miles south of Dell, stop off at the Big Sheep Overlook or go scope out the nearby Deadwood Canyon Campground. Discover remnants of abandoned mines at the byway’s eastern half and numerous hiking trails within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Big Sheep Creek is rumored to be an excellent fishing zone.
If you would like to experience Montana backcountry for yourself, Big Sheep Creek Byway is the road for you.
