Located just 40 miles northeast of Las Vegas, the Bitter Springs Back Country Byway offers a refreshing break from the noise and flashing lights of "The Strip." Lean back and kick into low gear as this 28-mile unpaved road takes you on a journey through the desert foothills of the Muddy Mountains of Nevada.
As you wind your way through dry washes and foothills of the craggy Muddy Mountains, don’t be fooled by the rocky landscape. Upon further examination, some of those “rocks” may be dust-covered remnants of abandoned borax mining operations. Also keep an eye out for views of the dramatic Mojave Desert landscape, including intermittent streams, golden and fiery red sandstone formations, desert wildlife, and the barren tracks of the Old Spanish Trail. First traveled in 1776 by Spanish Explorers, the trail was later used by mountain men and early settlers during their westward expansion.
Enjoy the solitude of the byway in one day, or bring your sleeping bag and do some old-fashioned camping along the way. Due to the mountains' rugged terrain, a high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. Enjoy the enchanting seclusion of this desert byway, but don’t forget to bring plenty of water and tell someone where you are going-- who knows, they may want to come with you!
Come drive a part of history and take a break from the modern world as you enjoy rudimentary camping and discover dusty abandoned borax mines. Take a deep breath and become captivated by a fascinating desert backdrop while you coast the Bitter Springs Back Country Byway.
