The Chimney Peak Back Country Byway offers a fascinating display of scenery as the mountainous terrain of the Sierra Nevadas merges with the Mojave Desert. Bring your camera and capture the experience as you traverse through wide, open meadows of pinyon pine and sagebrush and around rugged mountain peaks. Be prepared to snap photos of wildlife as it appears unforeseen around corners of this 39-mile route.
To make the most of your undertaking, pick up an interpretive brochure available at the Kiosk on Canebrake Road just off of Highway 178 or at the BLM office in Bakersfield. As you travel the byway, you’ll find yourself surrounded by three wilderness areas: Owens Peak, Chimney Peak, and Domeland. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, famous for its diversity and extremes as it winds its way from Mexico to Canada, intersects with the byway. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this nearly century-old destination, whether you can only give a few hours or a few days.
You'll be delighted with the byway as you explore its unique landscape that highlights the clash between desert and mountains. Whether you want to develop your photography skills, hike a piece of history, or camp in the wild, rugged country, you’ll remember your adventure along the Chimney Peak Back Country Byway for many years to come.
