Take a River Boat Tour on Big Bend

Updated Apr 10, 2012 in Getaways: Escaping the Cold and Get Outdoors! And Enjoy Nature and Get Outdoors! And Go Boating

You'll need a boat to see many of the rare and endangered critters who live in the moss-decked cypresses and verdant wetlands of Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park on the Big Bend Scenic Byway in Florida. Bring a camera -- the park's popular River Boat Tour along the Wakulla River provides candid glimpses of wading birds, sunbathing alligators, and local fauna and flora. The park is home to over a dozen rare and endangered creatures, including manatees and gopher tortoises! Listen to stories told by the boat tour guides, including tales of indigenous peoples, explorations of the spring's deep and shadowed caves, and movies filmed here at the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world. The tours are among the most popular tourist activities in Florida.

After skimming across the water in the boats, cool off with a swim in the cool water of the springs or a jump off the high diving platform, or visit the historic lodge and eat "Tarzan's Favorite Fried Chicken," "World Famous Navy Bean Soup," and more in the dining area.

The River Boat Tours run 365 days a year, weather permitting. Kids under 3 are free. The tours start at 9:40 am and run at various times throughout the day, based on demand. There is a fee to enter this park. Contact the park for further information.
